Benjamin R. Morgan born ca 1730 Chester of Philadelphia and Gloucester NJ

My Morgan relatives came from Mantua Twsp.,Gloucester Co, NJ. Adam Morgan lived near Elisha Chew and John and Sarah Morgan at Carpenter's Landing. When they gave up running the Sign of the Golden Sheaf in Swedesboro NJ where my ancestor Benjamin Rush Morgan was born in 1822, they arrived at Moreland Two, Philadelphia Co. about 1826 (1830 census), later moving to Blockley in Western division of Philadelphia County. When Benjamin Rush Morgan married he married his neighbor, the daughter of a master dyer of papers whose family of Leach had owned paper factories in Ireland and Manchester, England. The Leaches arrived after Christmas in 1829 on the ship Algonquin in the port of Philadelphia. There were not very many people on board. They moved directly next door to my Morgan ancestor in Blockley. In 1857 Hannah Leach and Benjamin Morgan moved to Spring City, Chester Co where there was a paper factory which probably means her father had something to do with running it. Benjamin's father Adam Morgan Esq. owned part of a boot factory in Philadelphia and his daughter Louisa B. Morgan and her sister Maria Bullock Morgan owned a millinery shop. Alot of the Morgans seemed to deal in clothes and shoes, at least in my family, since a couple hundred years.

My great aunt Laura Morgan, as well as my great great aunt Anne Franklin Morgan (daughter of Benjamin Rush E. Morgan 1822) said they moved from NJ because our Morgan ancestor was disowned by the meeting in NJ, so we cleared out rather live as ostracised citizens. But who knows. The meetings actually disowned individuals, not whole families. They said the Benjamin we descend from was disowned but they were thinking it was Benjamin R. E. Morgan b 1822 Swedesboro NJ and that he went to Moorestown Meeting. Not possible. He was living in Philadelphia by the time he was old enough to get disowned. So it seems to be the usual problem of getting generations mixed up. In other words it is a Benjamin R. Morgan of another generation.

I have suspected for a long time they were meaning Benjamin R. Morgan who was read out of meeting 1795 for warlike activities. Benjamin Rawle Morgan was read out of meeting in 1795- and after doing this research, but looking at his census data he seems childless. So I realize it is HIS father from whom I COULD be descended-Benjamin R. Morgan Sr. and his unknown second wife for which he was disowned, as she was not a Quaker. Or it could be from a son of Benjamin Sr who was born right after his second marriage. Nothing is known about his children in the second marriage, so I have no solved my own Morgan mystery. But it can be solved if someone will look up the deed at Gloucester Cout House. This is the notation I have from the Doughten Papers stored at the Court House:

Deed Nathan Thomas, et ux., dtd 5 Aug 1819 Bk. EE p. 481 to Elisha Chew 5 Aug 1819. Land adjoining ADAM MORGAN's land; and which land Nathan Thomas purchased of JOHN MORGAN & SARAH, his wife by deed 26 March 1817 Bk. Z, p. 416- Doughten papers Glou. Co. Clerk's office.”

DEEDS AND LAND RECORDS

Many historical records are recorded in the
County Clerk’s Office dating back to 1686, the year that Gloucester County was incorporated. In fact, the deed of the first property purchased by the United States Government dated July 5, 1776 is one of the documents on record here along with other countless recordings that affect real estate title. These records include deeds, mortgages, judgments, and other land attachments.

“The Sign of the Golden Sheaf tavern was situated in the angle formed by the junction of the Salem and Sculltown ( Auburn ) roads at Swedesboro. Adam Morgan operated it in 1821. In his application for a license he stated the house had been built as a tavern and always used as such. The compiler has had many good meals at the "Sign of the Golden Sheaf," and has often inquired about its registry books but like nearly everything else, excepting the church and graveyard of Trinity Church, there is but little historical information obtainable since the death of our honored and respected Quaker friend, Capt. Chas. D. Lippincott.”

Benjamin Morgan 1 (Sr.) born 1730 in Chester, PA (even though his brothers and sisters were all born in Waterford Township Gloucester Co NJ) and was the son of Alexander Morgan born ca 1702 in NJ (Philadelphia MM) and his wife was Hannah Cooper Married: 14 OCT 1717 in Haddonfield MM, Gloucester County, N. Alexander's father was Griffith Morgan. The Source for this is p. 212, First Immigrant Settlers of West Gloucester County, New Jersey, by John Colement of Haddonfield, NJ.

Benjamin Sr family was living in Gloucester Co NJ, but those old residents presumably sought brides in the Welsh tract, as well as visited, and had business associations for a long time in Philadelphia as well as being able to meet at YEARLY MEETING. I think some commuted from Gloucester to Philadelphia every day. In winter they took a sleigh across the Delaware . Mickle of Woodbury Meeting speaks of doing that in his diaries from the earlier 1800s. Benjamin R. had property in Gloucester NJ

He was Lawyer Candidate for Pennsylvania state senate 26 February 1795.Benjamin Rawle Morgan served as a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania from 1797 until his death in 1840. Other information:
2 Jane Roberts in the family of Owen and Ann is that the minutes the 1703 Jane died the same year, so I assumed that had another girl and named her Jane who would have been born at a later date which is not recorded. They did that with another boy baby as well. This happened with her brother Owen-there was another Owen before him. There are descendants claiming Sarah and Lydia were also from Owen by another wife, which I assume was an earlier one, and Sarah and Lydia were old enough to have moved to another Meeting. I do not know.

There were 2 Jane Roberts:
1) b AFTER 1703 in Merion-Jane Roberts (d/o Owen Roberts and Ann Bevan) who married John Nichols/Nicholas and had no children and died fall of 1765.

2) Jane Roberts (d/o Awbrey-he was the son of Owen Roberts and Ann Bevan) who married 17 SEP 1761 in Philadelphia MM. He waited about 5 years to marry ! Benjamin R. Morgan Sr from Philadelphia Meeting (also witness to his Aunt in laws will). That younger Jane died 12 Feb1765 (before her aunt) probably in childbirth so that her son Benjamin Jr. was only a few months old or at the most 3 years old. He was Jane Roberts Nicholas nephew. Her nephew Benjamin Jr´s father Benjamin Morgan Sr.(widower of Jane Roberts Morgan) is who I am assuming married out of Meeting in 1772-men did not stay alone very long in the old days- and he had a young son who needed a mother!!!

I used to have a town meeting minutes in Philadelphia for the application to prolong the permit for the Gloucester Co settlers who were living in caves along the bank in Gloucester Co to continue to live there until their cabins/houses were built. late 1600s.

From a fellow Quaker:
JANE NICHOLAS AND ROBERTS

As for the two Jane Roberts, they didn’t help us any by dying the same year, did they? I’m amused by your comment that Benjamin Morgan Jr. married his 2nd wife very soon after he lost his first wife, and why…because he needed a mother for his infant son. That happened in my own family. My mother died when I was 14 months old and my only brother was 4 days old. Dad remarried within the year, and that was not a pleasant marriage. We had a stepmother who acted more like a prison matron, and she treated my brother and me like we were the juvenile delinquent prisoners. Ah, but that was long ago – she and my Dad are gone, and brother died in 2004 after a somewhat confused life and a career in the Army Air Force Pararescue service. Daredevels who rescued, first, astronauts when they landed in capsules in the ocean, and later, when that wasn’t needed, they rescued anyone who needed to be rescued in any country that needed them. Life does go on!

My illustrious ancestor, Dr. Bernardus VanLeer, came to America in 1696 with his parents when he was eleven years old. He helped establish the VanLeer properties in Philadelphia and Delaware County and then returned to Europe to study medicine. He returned after 7 years, stayed single until 1734 when he married Mary Branson of Philadelphia and they had 6 sons. Mary died in 1748 (probably worn out!) Living in the VanLeer household was Dr. Bernardus’ father, John George vonLöehr (immigrant from Germany via London ) and his second wife, Rebecca Fauls VanLeer. Rebecca brought with her to the marriage, her daughter Christiana, age 11 at the time of her mother’s marriage to John George. John Goerge died in 1748, too, and Rebecca married again and left the VanLeer home. That left Christiana, age about 23, alone in the house with Dr. Bernardus and his 6 sons. Somebody had to take care of those kids! Dr. B. married Christiana in 1750 and she raised his kids and their kids (8 or more). She was 23 when they married; he was 64. He lived to be 104, and she outlived him by another 15 years and died at age 88. Hardy bunch!

I think we can write off Aquilla Roberts and his kin. They are not part of this OWEN ROBERTS family.

Susan: First: I am fascinated. Why am I getting replies from you which include the German language? Where are you ? Are you German, writing in English ? If so, you are doing it very well!

Some of the information you have provided is different from that which I have acquired. Here’s what I have from the Merion Meeting Burial Records, from accounts of the Bevan family in various history books, and from our own family sources.

OWEN ROBERTS was b. Oct 1, 1677 in Kiltgarth, Merionethshire, Wales , son of Hugh Robert and his wife Jane Owen. He married ANN BEVAN Jan. 23, 1696 at Merion Quaker Meeting. OWEN was 19 years old and ANN BEVAN was 20 years old. HUGH and his wife JANE OWEN ROBERT arrived in America on the ship Lyon Aug 12, 1682. Their son, OWEN, a child of only 5, was probably with them.

ANN BEVAN, was b. 1676 at Treverigg, the Bevan estate, in Llantrissant, Glamorganshire, Wales . ANN was the daughter of JOHN BEVAN and his wife BARBARA AUBREY. Both John and Barbara were Quaker Preachers. ANN was 7 years old when she came to America with her parents in 1683. Her parents were leaders of the Quaker venture to settle Merion in the Welsh Tract under William Penn.

OWEN and ANN BEVAN ROBERTS had the following children:

HUGH ROBERTS b. May 30, 1699

JOHN ROBERTS b. Aug 12, 1701 – Married MARY JONES

JANE ROBERTS b. Apr 2, 1703 – I believe this is the lady who m. NICHOLAS and whose will is being quoted, including naming her nieces and nephews, who would be the children of her brothers, John, Awbrey and Owen, and (possibly) those who were descendents of her husband ……. Nicholas. The Morgans ? You state that Awbry and Samuel Roberts are children of Jane’s brother Aubrey Roberts (and their sister Jane had married Benjamin Morgan.) This would not be Jane Roberts Nicholas (widow and childless,) sister of JOHN, AWBREY, AND OWEN ROBERTS. Jane Roberts Morgan was probably the second, and later, Jane. See below concerning MORGAN.

AWBREY ROBERTS b. Apr 24, 1705

OWEN ROBERTS b. Jul 18, 1708 – died in infancy

OWEN ROBERTS b. Aug 23, 1711 There were no other children of the marriage of OWEN and ANN BEVAN ROBERTS.

You quote these same children from the Merion Burial Records, yet you have included three other individuals as the children of OWEN and ANN BEVAN ROBERTS. You have included LYDIA ROBERTS, SARAH ROBERTS, and JANE ROBERTS b. 1704-1715 and married to …… NICHOLAS. OWEN and ANN BEVAN ROBERTS had only one daughter named Jane, not two. So far as I know, LYDIA and SARAH are not daughters of OWEN and ANN BEVAN ROBERTS. Also, I have never seen any source which mentioned that this OWEN ROBERTS had married twice.

Concerning the MORGANS: If BENJAMIN MORGAN (Sr.), son of ALEXANDER and HANNAH COOPER MORGAN, married Jane Roberts, I think it would be the later Jane, not Jane Roberts Nicholas who died in 1765. You state: JANE ROBERTS died 12 Feb 1765 Philadelphia and by 1772 he had remarried out of Meeting. Who married out of meeting? By “he” do you mean Benjamin Morgan (Sr.)? There is a BENJAMIN MORGAN, JR. whose mother would be _________? Why do you assume that BENJAMIN MORGAN Sr. , not Jr. was witness to the will of Jane Roberts Nicholas? If Benjamin Sr. was her husband, would he have been a suitable witness to her will? If Benjamin Jr. was her stepson, would he have been a suitable witness to her will? You state that Benjamin Jr. was her nephew, not her stepson.

You state that Benjamin Morgan was married to Jane Roberts, dau of the elder Jane Roberts’ brother Aubrey Roberts. That is entirely possible, although I have no source for that, but that is not the Jane Roberts who died in 1765 in Philadelphia and whose will is being quoted. The elder Jane would have named Jane Morgan, her niece, in her will, unless, of course, the niece, Jane, was deceased by 1765, leaving her husband Benjamin Morgan, Jr. her widower and, by law, a nephew of the elder Jane. This gets confusing, doesn’t it?

Referring back to the will of Jane Roberts Nicholas, I would agree with you that the nieces and nephews are named in sets – belonging to each of Jane’s brothers JOHN, OWEN, and AUBREY ROBERTS. However, your list includes “Mary and Anne Roberts (children of AQUILLA ROBERTS?”) I have checked at World Connect of Rootsweb and found Aquilla Roberts. One submitter lists him as a child of John Roberts and Mary ________ and another submitter lists him as a child of John Roberts and Mary Kilcup. These are not members of the family we are discussing. Our John Roberts, son of Owen and Ann Bevan Roberts, was married to Mary Jones. None of the Bevan sources I have seen name such a person. Can you tell me your source for that information?

Is it not possible that Mary is Mary Jones Roberts and Anne is Anne Bevan Roberts, both of whom were sisters-in-law of Jane Roberts Nicholas ?

To be sure, this will take some time to think through. I have not finished my study of the Merion Burial Records, so the fact that I have no Lydia Roberts or Sarah Roberts in that database could mean simply that I haven’t come across those names as yet. However, I do believe the Owen and Ann Bevan Roberts family information I have quoted is correct, and we just have to figure out who the other individuals really are. Please keep in touch.

Ho Marjorie
I lived right near Merion and used to walk to the park to walk my dogs in the 1969-1973 times (Be-ins in the Fairmount Park ) and to see a friend who lived in Merion. I lived at the train station at City Line Avenue . My mother spent part of her childhood in bala cynwyd and my grandparents lived on Rock Glenn dr. My cousins live near there now. I have been trying to figure out my Morgans who were Philadelphia-Gloucester Co -early Quaker settlers and trying to figure out about the Benjamin Morgan which is how I stumbled on the information. I think I found out which Roberts they they are--I will put it at the bottom and you can tell me if I am right. Some of their children are missing I think. I went to Merion Meeting one time, but I preferred Chestnut Hill Meeting the best and then Germantown Meeting because they were so friendly. The most unfriendly I went to was Race St (formerly Mulberry)--Arch was better. On the main line I ran into a few mink coats at meeting and got turned off as a young Friend. I attended Wilmington Del meeting and then Augusta Monthly Meeting in GA as a child. later I went to Charleston Meeting with Linda Miller and Winafred and son, and Carol Lee and Ben Cameron.

As for Jane Roberts, she had no children and she died in 1765, so then Benjamin Senior witnessed her will it was because he had been had to her brother Awbrey´s daughter Jane -a neice of hers (Benjamin jr. was jane Nicholas nephew). He married another woman in 1772 who was not Quaker-- from the data --but do not know who she was because they were too snooty to mention her..
Susan Aldridge

I think her Nicholas husband and jane Roberts born sometime after 1704 had no heirs, no children- at least none alive and none who had children. There are no sons or daughters in her will--only nephews and nieces. She lists the children in family groupings I believe. So these are the children from each of her brothers and I tried to identify them, but it was hard. Even though they are no relation.

Susan: Thank you for the information you posted. The people you mentioned are not in our direct line, but my husband and I find all information about the Merion Quakers of interest. We were born and raised in what was Merion in the Welsh Tract in Pennsylvania , as were many previous generations of our families, and we grew up with people who were descendants of those Quakers. The names are all very familiar to us.

One question about the information you posted concerning BENJAMIN MORGAN, SR. The reference states that he was disowned at Phila MM in 1772 for marriage contrary to discipline. I suppose there were numerous offences which were categorized “outside of discipline” but it usually meant marriage to someone other than a Quaker, i.e., marriage by an official of another religion. I can’t see how his marriage to Jane Roberts would qualify in that regard…Jane, daughter of Owen Roberts and Ann Bevan, was certainly a born Quaker. Perhaps Jane left the Quaker religion, who knows? Or, perhaps Benjamin married someone else in 1772, and later married Jane. At any rate, Jane Roberts Nicholas had a nephew Benjamin Morgan. Perhaps through her husband …..Nicholas. These things are like jigsaw puzzles, and fascinate me.
